Ways to Earn Money over the Summer

Hello everyone!

One of my biggest frustrations when I was younger was not having money for what I wanted. Obviously, I understand that other things are more important than material posessions, but it is nice to have money to spend on nice things and experiences. I always looked for ways to earn money, but it was hard to do as a young teenager in a rural town. As I got older, I found ways to get creative and make money for food, clothing, and fun times, and I've listed some of my favorite ways down below for you.

Ways to Make Money over the Summer

1. Get a job. This may seem like an obvious and easy option, but for many, it isn't. If you live in an area with accessible jobs and are of age to work legally, then go for it. I would suggest asking around at places you like to shop or visit, checking out job sites like Indeed, or looking on your campus' job portal site, if you're in college. Also, a quick Google search will do you good. Search "Jobs in [insert your city's name]" to find some options. A quick note: unless you absolutely need the money, I would hold off on getting a job you're not interested in.

2. Online surveys. This is probably the easiest thing on this list. During the school year, it's a bit difficult to accumulate decent funds from this, but if you have free time, then you have time to spend. My favorite websites are Swagbucks and Opinion Outpost. Similarly, I like Free My Apps, a website for my iPhone that gives you points for downloading free apps and exchange those points for giftcards and money. Also, I like User Testing, a website that pays you to test out websites and provide feedback.

3. Baby-sitting. If you live in a decently populated area, and enjoy children, I would strongly suggest baby-sitting. I love to use Care to find jobs, and I recommend uploading an intro video to your profile to encourage more people to respond. If your town isn't very active on sites like that, then post on social media and reach out to families you know. Also, if you know anyone traveling that will need a house sitter or pet sitter, reach out to them as well!

4. Side hustles. This one probably requires the most time and effort, but if you have passion, then its worth it. What ever talent or service you can offer, pursue it! If you are a photographer, take photos during the summer. If you can bake or cook, have bake sales and/or sell plates. If you make jewelry or clothing, sell it. If you do hair or makeup, post your work on Instagram, and promote yourself. There is a way to turn almost any talent into a lucrative outlet, so sit down to figure out the specifics and get your money up.

5. Clean your house. If you're closet is overflowing with pieces of clothing you haven't worn, or it you have items around the house you don't use, sell them. There are plenty of websites to sell you clothing on; my favorite is Poshmark. If you want to go the old-fashioned route, have a yard sale and let go of some of your old things. If you don't have enough to sell on your own, get together with some of your friends, and have a group yard sale. If you ABSOLUTELY need money, there are always pawn shops, but don't expect to earn a great deal.

See you soon,
