3 Ways to Upgrade Your Look for Less (or for Free!)
As a
working college student, I understand the dilemma of wanting to always look put
together but also realizing how expensive it can be. I’m not sure who can
afford to have a brand new “look” for every event or don a new outfit every day
in class. I have, however, mastered the art of making the most of what I have,
and I have a few tips for you all on that topic. You don’t have to have a ton
of money to style fashionable looks. Sometimes, the smallest and slightest
actions can take your outfit to the next level. It only takes a little to
upgrade your look.
Tip #1: Find statement pieces.
Lately,
I’ve been spending more time looking for eye-catching, statement pieces.
Personally, I love a cool pair of jeans, but statement pieces range beyond
denim into jewelry (which we’ll get into), tops, shoes, and so forth. When you
have one statement piece, the rest of your outfit can (and should) be more
relaxed or neutral. Having a statement pair of jeans gives me space to wear a
plain white t-shirt and my Vans without having to have a million expensive
pieces. And don’t let the word “statement” scare you! It does not mean
expensive. If you spend time combing the racks of your local Goodwill or
Salvation Army, I’m sure you can find some nice vintage pieces that can carry
your outfit on their own.
Tip #2: Accessorize!
Going back
to that jewelry piece, accessories can really make a look. I love gold pieces
because they give a timeless, expensive look, and gold looks best on my skin
tone. Find what finish you enjoy and start collecting more pieces. A simple
outfit with a beautiful pair of earrings can take you far. Accessories are also
a fun place to play with trends (one word: tassels!) because they are often
less expensive than clothing pieces. Also, don’t be afraid to don a hat or an
attention-grabbing bag! Visit a Forever21 or a Charming Charlie’s for trendy,
inexpensive pieces to give your outfits an editorial edge.
Tip #3: Change the way you style
pieces.
This is my
favorite tip because unlike the others, it cost absolutely no money! Take a
look at the way you’re styling your outfits. Could you take a few more steps
and tuck the front of your top or roll your jeans? Things like that really make
a difference in creating stylish looks. Lately, I’ve been tying the front of my
tops to play with lengths and silhouettes, and it looks great with high-waisted
jeans.
Hopefully,
you found a couple of pointers that you can use this upcoming year to look
stylish for less! What do you already do to upgrade your outfits? Let me know
in the comment section below!
See you
soon!
